Success is NOT Sexy!

I was flipping through the TV channels a few days ago and stopped on this film –documentary on Katy Perry. I don’t know what made me stop and watch her; I’m not a fan of her music; in fact I don’t even think I know one song of hers! All I know of her is she has pink hair and makes what I call ‘bubblegum’ music! But there was something about what she was doing that made me take her seriously for the first time. Here was Katy in a simple t-shirt, sweat pants and cap, sweating and working out for her live performances. Here was a mega superstar putting her all into making sure she was fit and prepared for her craft… No make-up, no CGI; just pure blood sweat and tears! 

 

I took my hat off to her for the effort she put into ensuring she would put on the best show she could for her fans…. She cared and it showed! As I kept watching, it was time for her live performance and here was the Katy I knew: loud pink hair and ‘bubblegum ‘ music- but I now saw her with a different lens because I saw and appreciated the work and dedication she put behind what seems so easy for her. 

 I soon realized that success is NOT sexy- it’s the toil and labour of falling and picking yourself back up; it’s the blocking of the constant self-doubt that creeps in; it’s the simple t-shirt, sweat pants and cap… 

I can imagine thousands of girls (and boys :) ) that want to be Katy Perry- because they want the glamour and glitz of the big stage. But I would bet that only a handful could travel that road of her true success: the behind the scenes, with so many sacrifices only Katy knows. Its like if you go to any Disney World or theme park, there is what the public sees: the beautiful rides and colourful settings; but pull back the curtains and see where the real work really goes on. It’s not so pretty!

And so it should be in our own journeys to our goals: when we are stuck in the mud or struggling with an idea or just made a huge blunder- THAT’S when your

 ‘success gear’ should rev up and kick in! Not when things are going right.

 Things going right are a RESULT of success, not success itself…

Success is not the big stage: it’s the CONSISTENT dedication to your craft and doing the basics well! Too often we like to complicate things! 

Success is simple; it's not easy but it's simple. So keep it that way!
